The practice behind the pause
Why a longer exhale
The pendant is built around one old, well-studied idea: making your exhale longer than your inhale. You simply breathe out, slowly, through it.
Five minutes, most days
In a 2023 Stanford study, five minutes a day of slow, extended-exhale breathing (“cyclic sighing”) improved people’s mood and lowered their physiological arousal over a month — more so than mindfulness meditation.1
Your body’s own brake
A slow exhale nudges the body toward its “rest” (parasympathetic) side, gently slowing the heart between breaths — the natural down-shift behind that feeling of settling.2
Something to breathe through
The narrow channel paces the breath for you — it naturally lengthens the exhale, so the practice comes with you anywhere, no app and no screen.
What’s happening inside
Breathing is the one “automatic” system you can steer by hand. When the exhale gets longer than the inhale, activity along the vagus nerve — the main parasympathetic (“rest-and-digest”) pathway between brain and body — increases, and the heart naturally eases between breaths, a rhythm called respiratory sinus arrhythmia.3
